Vikram Kushwah's photography instills in it Romantic visions and Surrealist ideas. His projects have strong narrative themes inspired by the somewhat uncanny nature of dreams and how the memory distorts real facts. Many a time his own childhood imagination fueled by the storybooks he read as a child, have led him to doing elaborate stagings for his photographs.
Vikram’s photos reflect a longing for childhood dreams and fantasies, and for a world unsullied by modernity and the mundane; a simpler life, when ‘miracles were taken for granted’, as Vikram puts it. Similarly, through his corpus of work, Vikram strives to ‘challenge reality’ and rebel against the modern world through celebrating the romanticism and innocence of the ‘pure self’ of the child. The poignant symbols and images featured in his surreal and magical photos are a manifestation of this celebration and yearning.
In addition to being inspired by his childhood memories and his notions of romanticism, Vikram’s artistic influences are vast. While through his work one can see a direct link to classics such as Alice in Wonderland, Vikram also cites the works of Sigmund Freud and the photographer Guy Bourdin as having left a profound impression on him. As well, while pursuing his Master’s, he was particularly drawn to the work of the Surrealists, the Romantics, and the Pre-Raphaelites.
Vikram studied fashion design after high school which helped him chance upon the medium of photography. After working as an assistant photographer in Mumbai for a year, it was time for some intensive formal education in the subject. He then studied photography for a year in the quaint and hilly town of Ooty in south of India before moving to London. Vikram did a PG diploma at London College of Communication and finished his MA in Photography at UCA, Rochester, UK.
Vikram’s photos have graced prominent fashion publications around the world including Vogue Italia, Vogue India and Harpaer’s Bazaar. His ‘Ofelea’ series has been critically acclaimed and has featured in numerous exhibitions and art fairs. He now lives and works as a commercial and art photographer in England.
