Shore, Alice Gur-Arie 2013.
From the series Iceland Blues, comes a very simple image that draws you in. Examine the horizon where land meets the sky. Explore the flat, pebbled beach, still water and hazy sky. Iceland in winter is cool shades of blue, greys that catch and hold the light, and clean whites that celebrate the pure, unceasing winds.
This is an edition of 5. Signed and numbered by the artist.
Size: 60.9 x 40.6 cm.
Alice Gur-Arie is an artist represented by Bridgeman Gallery, the online gallery from the Bridgeman Images group showcasing original artwork from a handpicked group of contemporary artists.
My work sits in the "sweet spot" where fine art and photography converge. I use photography to capture visual reality but then translate the emotional sensibility of the scene into images that challenge the viewer to consider the picture from a different perspective.
The themes of my work are as diverse as the countries from which the pictures originate. Within that context, I strive to produce an image that is a rich, textured, and unexpected interpretation of the world around us. All the landscapes in this gallery, from Iceland and Italy, are examples of that creative approach.
About Alice Gur-Arie
Alice Gur-Arie began her career as a conceptual copywriter, graphic designer, and creative director, eventually responsible for positioning global brands, and developing and executing their marketing and communication strategies.
Returning to her creative roots several years ago as an artist/photographer and writer, Alice has produced five fine art photography exhibitions, including The Iceland Trilogy, held at the Embassy of Iceland in London, England, and Black, White and Red held in Nice, France.
About her work, she says, "It's about finding a moment, a scene, a subject, and retelling the image in a way that is true to, but at the same time unlike what the lens captured. I see my role as interpreting the story, asking the viewer to examine what they see, ponder what they think the story is about, and consider how it makes them feel."
Ms. Gur-Arie achieved early recognition of her individual creative style with two series of works nominated for a Terry O'Neill Tag photography award, Drama in the Fog, and Love on the Rocks from Iceland, Unsmiling Beauty. Subsequently, Tapestry, from the series Still, Quiet, Blue was long listed for the Aesthetica Art Prize. In addition to creating gallery works, Alice produces images exclusively for commercial licensing. Last year Bridgeman Images invited her to become a Studio Artist, and featured her as Artist of the Month for April 2015.
Ms. Gur-Arie also is known for her "straight" photography. Neither posed nor staged, much of this work, shot in international locations from Mumbai to Jerusalem, and Macau to New York, is part of her ongoing "street' project In Public Places.
Ms. Gur-Arie currently is writing a book of short stories and images. She holds degrees in English literature, Education and Business from York University in Toronto, Canada.
