About the Artwork

Luke Fowler's limited edition Rhododendron / bookshelf (Edinburgh and Glasgow, 2012), 2014 was created in tribute to the late French filmmaker Chris Marker to accompany his posthumous exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, A Cat Without a Grin, 16 April - 22 June 2014. The edition is a photographic split-sequence image, featuring details from a bookshelf and the botanical gardens of Edinburgh.

Fowler is a filmmaker who uses photographs, archival images and music, building experimental cinematic collages that ultimately deconstruct conventional thoughts about biography and the documentary; the viewer is drawn in and confronted with their own relationship to history and to film as an art form.

About the Artist

In 2012, Fowler was nominated for the Turner Prize receiving acclaim for his film All Divided Selves 2011 which explored the ideas and legacy of Scottish psychiatrist RD Laing (1927-89). Fowler also received the inaugural Derek Jarman Award in 2008.

Fowler was born in Glasgow in 1978 where he lives and works. He is represented by The Modern Institute, Glasgow.
