was born in 1966 in a tiny village called Ahascragh in County Galway, in the West of Ireland. He started sewing when he was about five, making dresses and hats for his sister’s dolls. In 1985 he moved to Dublin to study fashion at the National College of Art & Design, and three years later he won a place on the MA fashion design course at the Royal College of Art in London from where he graduated with first class honours.
Following his academic career, 1989 saw his move into the fashion world following a meeting with Tatler’s style editor, Isabella Blow which resulted in designing hats for Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel over the next ten years. As a highly acclaimed designer, he has won many an award including five British Designer of the Year, the Moet & Chandon award for luxury, International Designer of the Year in 2004 at the China Fashion Awards in Shanghai and an OBE in 2007 in recognition of his services to the British Fashion industry.
