This Wishbone Ash album cover design is one of a collection of prints launched in 2014, celebrating previously unpublished album cover art from the Hipgnosis archives.
New England is the seventh studio album by the British rock band, one that would mark their 'Americanization' as they relocated from England to the Northeastern United States.
The album cover idea came from Peter Christopherson, the third core member of Hipgnosis, whose own sexuality seemed to inform this thoughtful photograph.
"The image seemed to encapsulate the frontier sensibility favoured by the band; a sense of new horizons and starting afresh, an inherent feeling of adventure blending with the vulnerability of the youth's bare torso and the slightly phallic nature of the sharpened stick. Kept in black and white it became more allegorical, subtly sensual and elegiac." Storm Thorgerson.
