    About the Artist

British-born artist Rupert Newman produces bespoke and highly original work to transform architecture and objects into unique and dynamic platforms for digital display.

After graduating from The Royal College of Art in 2010 (Printed Textiles), Newman began working with a series of screen printed wall hangings, which he brought to life by projecting light effects onto them. He soon realised that this technique (projection mapping) could fit within the coordinates of any object, art or architecture, completely transforming their appearance.

Newman plays with the abstraction of space, colour and light to form compositions in his shows. Relying on colour to communicate a meaning and focusing on basic geometric forms, Newman combines these principles and intelligently applies innovative technology to transpose his vision onto buildings and objects. Newman aims to achieve rhythm and movement in his work, juxtaposing colours and overlapping crystalline shapes in a logical and balanced composition.

Newman has established himself as one of the top projection mapping artists in the field, his client list gradually expanding as a result. This includes Warner Music Group (The Brit Awards after-party 2014, 2015), The Prime Minister, Dom Perignon, The Royal Society of Arts, Battersea Power Station, The London Business School, Newcastle University, The Photographers’ Gallery and Hix, to name a few. Newman had the opportunity to light a Boeing 747 for a spectacular wedding party, an example of his taylor-made, client-led commission work.

As well as light, Newman’s prints, paintings and fabric designs are sold to buyers and collectors worldwide. Fashion houses include Georgio Armani, Diane Von Furstenburg, Rebecca Taylor, Chauss, J. Crew, Custo Barcelona and GAP.

Newman’s work has been published in Martin Drawber’s New Fashion Print (Batsford, 2008), Simon Clarke’s Textile Design Portfolio (Laurence King 2012) and Sarah Braddock’s Digital Vision (Thames & Hudson, 2012). In August 2014, Newman was selected to be on the judging panel of the prestigious Texprint award, helping to select the top 24 textile design graduates / post graduates in the country.

Represented by Rook & Raven Gallery.
