About the Photographer
Michael was BAFTA’s main photographer during the 1970s, covering award ceremonies and special events including a One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest Q&A with director Milos Foreman, producers Saul Zantz and Michael Douglas, and stars Louise Fletcher and Jack Nicholson.
"My first assignment for BAFTA was photographing Princess Anne officially opening the Academy's headquarters, BAFTA 195 Piccadilly. On the big day, camera poised, I awaited her arrival on the pavement just outside the entrance. The Royal limousine had hardly come to rest before the door opened and the Princess was swept into the next door entrance - which happened to be a night club. Fortunately she'd not gone too far before her security people rushed forward and rectified the mistake."
About the Archive
Since its inception in 1947, the Academy’s prime focus has been celebrating excellence in the art forms of the moving image. Over more than 60 years, from the early days of the British Film Academy, through our later incarnation as the Society of Film and Television Arts, to our BAFTA activities today, we have quietly amassed a wealth of material that documents the history of our industry, our Awards ceremonies and inspirational events.
