Actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle, Jupiter Ascending) photographed by Jessie Craig in 2014. This photograph formed part of a series published in Wonderland magazine for the feature ‘Young & Restless: BAFTA’s Stars of Tomorrow’, which coincided with the British Academy Film Awards in 2014.
Each subject was asked a question about who they would most like to play, and Mbatha-Raw replied with: “Even though she’s hardly fictional, Cleopatra would be great to explore, as she’s reached an almost mythological status in history. Plus it would be interesting to discover the real woman beneath the image.”
In this image, Craig has been able to capture a star on the rise in a natural setting. She has a loose style, not highly stylised but rather capturing the spirit of her subjects.
The photograph is part of a new exhibition, The Director’s Cut: BAFTA Photography 2006–2016, curated by BAFTA Photography Director Janette Dalley. The exhibition shows a selection of Janette’s favourite images commissioned by BAFTA in her time as director.
