The design of Yanko Tihov’s limited edition print has been determined by the colours and motifs of each European nation’s passport during the 1960s, at a time when the continent was living in the shadows of the Cold War. Each passport has been carefully matched and embedded within their national borders as they existed at the time, and their texts, seals and coat of arms have been hand painted by the artist in 23 carat gold and silver shell. This hand finishing adds a unique layer, which beautifully reflects and enlivens the surface. Overall Europe 1960s – Cold War serves as both a reminder of the laws and jurisdictions, which bind individuals and offers a fascinating snapshot of Europe as it was 50 years ago.
