More about the artist

Roy Lichtenstein (27 October, 1923 – 29 September, 1997) was an American pop artist, best known for his boldly- coloured parodies of comic strips and advertisements.

In the 1960s, Lichtenstein became a leading figure of the new Pop Art movement. His work showed great understanding of modernist painting, subject matter and varied in style.

Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied, often in a tongue-in-cheek manner. His work was influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style .

Lichtenstein’s most influential art work was ‘Whaam!’,’ Drowning Girl’ and ‘Oh, Jeff I love, Too But ’Later in his career, Lichtenstein extended his source material to art history, including the work of Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, and experimented with three-dimensional works.
