Chlorophyll, Rob Churm 2014.

Rob Churm’s etchings depict a series of surreal scenarios in which experimental and uncanny worlds collide with the familiar. Amorphous forms float in scenes that lie somewhere between intricate doodle and pre-calculated drawing.

About the Artist

The convergence of seemingly mechanical or fabricated elements with the organic or anthropomorphic echoes the artist’s fabrication process –mechanically etched grayscale prints layered with incursions of fluidity and colour added later by hand.

Allusions to the body or the visceral alongside the industrial or machine-made, particularly in Recording Device, recall the works of Duchamp or Picabia and their exploration of automatism and the new machine age. The title Recording Device also makes a simultaneous self-reference to the process of print itself.

Rob Churm (b. 1979, Leighton Buzzard) graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2001. Recent solo exhibitions include Continue Without Losing Consciousness, Dundee Contemporary Arts, 2014, The Glasgow Weekend at BQ, Berlin, 2013, Exhaustion Hook at Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow, 2011 and Ethanol Buzzgrid at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (2009). Group projects include: Prawn’s Pee, Glasgow International Festival, 2012 and Le Drapeau Noir, Glasgow, 2010. He undertook a residency at Cove Park, Scotland, in 2013.
