Since the beginning of his career, Ding Yi has been preoccupied with the repetition of simple cross motifs, ‘x’ and ‘+’ which he uses to create vast aesthetic grids. Such physical repetition imbues Ding Yi’s work with a mantra-like, meditative quality. Not surprisingly, the artist cites the Chinese philosophy of Taoism as a source of inspiration, as well as the neon quality of Shanghai at night.

Ding Yi’s solo exhibitions at, amongst others, Long Museum, Shanghai, in 2015, Galerie Karsten Greve, Paris in 2014, and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham in 2005, have confirmed his position as one of China’s most important abstract artists today.
Ding Yi’s practice encompasses painting, sculpture, spatial installation and architecture. He works primarily with the symbol ‘+’, and its variant ‘x’, as formal visual signs, having deliberately adopted repetition as a direct expression of freedom from any social or ideological expectations for artistic practice and the turmoil of society. The simplicity of his compositional structure contrasts with Ding Yi’s use of a wide variety of materials and colours, ranging from monochromatic tones to bright fluorescents. These convey the excesses, stimuli, noise and chaos of Shanghai, his birthplace and hometown.
Ding Yi has exhibited extensively at various institutions and galleries, among many others ‘China 8, Contemporary Art from China at the Rhine and Ruhr’ (Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg, 2015); ‘Hans van Dujk: 5000 Names (Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Witte de With Centre, Rotterdam, 2014); and ‘Verso Est, Chinese Architectural Landscape’ (Museo Nazionale Delle Arti Del XXI Secolo MAXXI, Rome, 2011).
Recent solo exhibitions include Long Museum (West Bund 2015), Galerie Karsten Greve (Paris 2014), Minshen Art Museum (Shanghai 2011), Museo d’Arte Modena di Bologna (Bologna 2008), and Ikon Gallery (Birmingham 2005).
