About the Artist

Geologic Intimacy comprises a series of five woodblock prints made in collaboration with Dundee Contemporary Arts Print Studio. These works explore the artist’s longstanding fascination with geological phenomena.

Halperin has a highly experimental approach to print-based processes, which is particularly visible in this project. First, a series of her original drawings were used to make laser-cut wooden forms at the DCA Print Studio. These forms were submerged in the Blue Lagoon, an active geothermal pool in Iceland, where they were left to rapidly encrust in new silica mineral deposits over the course of 18 days.  To document this unique process of formation, Ilana shot an accompanying Super 8 film entitled Physical Geology (geothermal) on site in Iceland in 2011.

Returning to the DCA Print Studio, she cut a similar set of woodblocks and used these to make the series of large-scale relief prints. The mineral sculptures, film and woodblock prints were shown together in the acclaimed solo exhibition Steine at the Berliner Medizinhistorisches Museum der Charité in 2012. In summer 2013, Geologic Intimacy was shown in the DCA Print Space to mark the editioning of the series.
