Framed art print featuring artwork of Reflections: Art by Roy Lichtenstein.
This work is typical of the way Lichtenstein revelled in the artificial nature of picture-making. It is based on a painting he had made in 1962, entitled ‘Art’, in which he depicted the word ‘ART’ in white letters with red shadows against a yellow background. Lichtenstein’s source for the earlier work was a diagram from a printmaking manual, ‘Silk Screen Techniques’, published in 1958 in which the word ‘ART’ is used as short-hand for the artwork image to be printed. When Lichtenstein created this new version in 1988, he added a white border, blue frame and abstracted diagonal lines that stand in for reflections. These create a visual trick, suggesting we are seeing the ‘original’ painting through a new frame and its glazing.
