From behind the scenes snaps of glitzy award shows to iconic rock and roll portraits to fine art masterpieces, we count down our Top 10 favourite photographers of all time.

 

1. SARAH M LEE

Twice selected for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, official photographer for The Guardian and The Observer, Sarah M Lee’s career has spanned more than 15 years. She was commissioned by BAFTA to shoot on the red carpet and backstage at their Film and Television Awards, documenting the glitz, glamour and excitement.

2. SLIM AARONS

Slim Aarons is an iconic photographer, who worked mainly for society publications, taking pictures of the rich and famous. As well as his iconic society images, he also served as a photographer for the US military magazine Yank during World War II.

3. STORM THORGERSON

Graphic design and photographic legend Storm Thorgerson has created album artwork for the likes of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Genesis, The Cranberries and Muse, his design for Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon being called one of the greatest album covers of all time.

4. MICK ROCK

Mick Rock is “The Man Who Shot the 70s”, the inimitable rock photographer who launched his career with a then unknown David Bowie in 1972, going on to become his official photographer.

5. MURRAY CLOSE

Working for Stanley Kubrick on ‘The Shining’ in 1978 was the beginning of an illustrious career for Close, that has lasted for over 35 years and continues to this day. He has collaborated with Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg working on films such as ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Mission Impossible’, creating some of cinema’s most iconic images.

6. HUGH HOLLAND

Hugh Holland is revered for his seminal images documenting the classic era of the early skateboard scene in California in the early 1970’s, with many of the images featuring the now legendary names of the sport, such as Jay Adams and Stacy Peralta.

7. MORGAN SILK

Morgan Silk is an award winning international fine art and advertising photographer. He has photographed for Land Rover, BMW, Umbro and Nike, with his own projects receiving great acclaim.

8. DEEPAK CHOWDHURY

Gur-Arie's work sits in the "sweet spot" where fine art and photography converge. She uses photography to capture visual reality but then translate the emotional sensibility of the scene into images that challenge the viewer to consider the picture from a different perspective.
