Godard said all you need to make a film is a girl and a gun. This credo plays out obsessively through Robert's vivid, seductive screenprints, which re-imagine Warhol's Factory run by a co-op of Cahiers du Cinema, Kenneth Anger and Creem magazine. Robert is building a shrine to a deeply personal pantheon of the late 20th century's sharpest icons: silver screen goddesses, typically gamine, gun-toting, ideally both; rock'n'roll's holiest gunslingers; anti-heroes from cinema's slinkiest casting agency - all abstracted into impossibly vivid Technicolor. They approach a Soviet quality, like propaganda for a twilight zone politburo chaired by Fran Kubelik, Anna Karina, Keith Richards and Cat Ballou. The titles of the prints set up a pop culture feedback loop that tells you everything you need to know about the inspiration behind these glamorous, covetable images: dazzling reflections from a hall of mirrors where a superheated dialogue between rock'n'roll and cinema echoes into infinity.

Wishaw born (1972) Robert McSpadyen joined Glasgow Print Studio in 2006 and works exclusively in the screenprinting medium, the technique best suited to producing the bold, exPress pickively coloured, photo-based pop which he creates. With no formal art training other than the screenprinting classes he undertook at GPS, Robert views the last four years of producing work in the creative and encouraging environment of the GPS workshop as his "art school years" where he had the time and freedom to develop technically and to find his own unique visual style, working alongside and learning from more established and experienced artists, particularly Master Screenprinter Scott Campbell. Robert creates large and small-scale prints that reflect his own pop cultural and cinematic preoccupations and obsessions.
