Ian Dawson (born in Darlington, Durham 1969). RCA graduate Dawson has been exhibiting internationally since 1992. Whether applying a blow torch to mass produced plastic objects or making sculpture out of sheets of paper printed with complex geometric designs and them crumpling them into piles, there is a sense of beautiful chaos in Dawson’s work.

Building and destructing at once, a process whereby an image becomes a thing, or a common object, such as a wheelie bin, becomes extruded and extended into a vivid and dynamic art object. For Pretty Taxing Dawson has drawn on his orginal Spirograph works which were meticulously created by hand using the popular 1960’s drawing toy on to perfectly gesso prepared surfaces. At once beautiful, beguiling and nostalgic, for his latest set of prints Dawson has used a Spirograph generating computer programme allowing him to focus on the form, colour and intricate inter-relationships of these familiar ‘drawn’ shapes. The ‘Blue Spiro’ tax disc holder for the Pretty Taxing range is typical of these new works, bright, seductive and compelling in its detail.
