IAN ROSENFELD Q&A
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN THE SELECTION PROCESS?
'What I am looking for is an artist that has technical ability, what the Americans like to call ‘manual dexterity’ – that’s very important, but also that the artist has an original voice and gives a sense that they are going to grow in that original voice'.

Tell us about emerging artists at TOAF
'What’s great about TOAF is that not all the artists are 23 and just out of college but that there are also more mature artists exhibiting there. We must encourage new artists but it is hugely important not to judge artists purely on how old they are'.
'People often invest in young artists, betting on them to become ‘the next big thing’ but it’s crucial not to think just because he’s 40, he’s not going to make it'.
Is there anything you will be looking out for at TOAF?
'No, I hope not. I hope I am going to be very democratic'.

A - FULL WIDTHQ&A with The Other Art Fair Director
Tell us why you chose to call it The Other Art Fair. Do you see it as alternative to other art fairs?
'Very simply it is the other way to experience an art fair: meeting and buying artwork directly from the artists. There is an abundance of exceptional emerging artists and plenty of buyers eager to discover new talent'.
'The Other Art Fair bridges the gap between these two parties: it not only provides a platform for visitors to discover a breadth of new art, but also a fun, relaxed atmosphere in which to do this'.
'The fair also encourages the relationship between galleries and artists. Attended by high profile gallerists, the fair is an invaluable chance for artists to gain exposure'.
Do you have a favourite part of the fair?
'Alongside an array of new artists, I’m specifically looking forward to the performance programme hosted by FAD and Beach London'.
'In addition our curatorial partner Jotta will be hosting ‘The Others Talk’, a series of lectures and masterclasses by key individuals from the art world which are designed to inform, challenge and entertain'.
'The pre-fair artist support package, combined with a prize hosted by The Office Group for the best curated stand, has encouraged artists to be imaginative with the presentation of their work, hence this fair will hopefully be a particularly inspiring experience for visitors'.
Have you got any advice for first time buyers at the fair?
'It's such a cliche but most importantly you should buy work that you like. There is a huge variety of work at The Other Art Fair: from small prints for £40 to large sculptures or paintings from more established artists'.
'It can be beneficial to consider what sort of piece you are looking to buy. Each artist has a personal profile on TOAF website with a biography and examples of their work so use pages for some ideas'.
'The fair is a rare opportunity for buyers to discuss work directly with the artists. Whilst you are considering the purchase, relax in the Breakfast Club’s pop-up restaurant or with a Sipsmith cocktail'.

'With every edition, the fair seems to bring more of an international selection of artists so I will be watching out for some exciting talents both, local and foreign'.
