Tate Modern is just part of a wider mission - a mission, through the Tate's four nationwide galleries, to promote the public understanding of all kinds of art, all over the country. Millbank's Tate Britain is the home of British art, effortless mingling the old and the new (it's always a joy to wander the world's best collection of Turners and then go see the hugely different modern work from the prize that bears his name).

The waterside Tate Liverpool is the centrepiece of that city's cultural rebirth, mixing the best of the huge Tate collections with brand-new contemporary exhibitions, while Tate St Ives brings the town's rich artistic history into sharp focus and provides the country's premiere sculpture venue.

There's a commitment to make that work available online too. Tate's highly successful commercial operation, Tate Enterprises, brings a huge range of exhibition catalogues, books relating to the collection and beautiful children's books to the public. All proceeds from the sale of its books and products go back to funding Tate.
