Shakespeare's GlobeIt took an American, Sam Wannamaker, to bring the home of Shakespeare's plays back to life in London. And the project's been done with such verve and feeling that what could have been a kitschy culture theme park instead feels like a return to theatre's raucous roots.
The most diverse audience in the city's theatreland throw themselves into every performance and you feel Will himself would appreciate the clamour. Online, the Globe does even more to bring Shakespeare's world into the 21st century. A whole new generation of readers can lose themselves in manga versions of Hamlet and A Midsummer's Night Dream and sing along to recordings of Elizabethan street songs.
"The Globe shop has something for everyone; there are even Montague and Capulet tattoos." |
