    Q&A with Art Projects Curator:

    Pryle Berhman
  • D

What do you think Art Projects offers to the art collector?

'Many of the artworks on display in Art Projects are by up-and-coming artists, so it provides collectors with a really good snapshot of the next generation and, as these artists are at the start of their careers, the prices of their work are usually at the more affordable end of the scale as well.'

'One of the criteria of Art Projects is that galleries should suggest solo shows, the stands devoted to the work of one artist allow the collector to have a more in-depth view of their practice.'

'Finally, Art Projects has a number of stands – by Eastern Pavilions, Enitharmon Editions, PEER, The Multiple Store and Whitechapel Gallery – of prints and multiples by internationally-famous artists and, as these are of course less in price than one-off originals, this allows new as well as established collectors to purchase works by some of the world's most significant artists.'

  • D

What are the highlights at Art Projects to look out for this year?

'So many of this year's exhibitions in Art Projects are interesting because, the curatorial themes are rather leftfield! Ceri Hand Gallery is presenting an exhibition drawn from gallery artist Doug Jones’ interest in the absurd, unplanned moments of misdemeanour that occur in political life.'

'For Samara Scott's solo exhibition she is creating a mock showroom interior (complete with carpets, furnishings, etc., all designed by the artist) that conveys the broad range of Scott’s practice.'

'And then there is Limoncello, who are presenting a group show with 30 female artists and one male artist mimicking the ITV game show Take Me Out, in which thirty wall-based works by women artists are snugly installed and jostling for attention opposite an easel with the one male artist’s painting. As in the game show, when a girl is picked for a date (or, rather, a painting is sold) a new one is ushered in as a replacement...'

  • D

If you were to buy one art work from London Art Fair what would it be?

'Can I buy a whole exhibition and pretend it is an installation and thus really one work? Is that cheating?? If not, then I'd buy the installation on Hilger BROTKunsthalle's stand called ‘Come Invest in Us. You’ll Strike Gold’.

'This offers diverse perspectives on how artists from the Middle East and North Africa region reflect on issues such as militarisation and the flow of people and commodities, and how these are affecting an entire region.'

'I think it's a fascinating snapshot of how artists have responded to a number of urgent and complex issues that I'd want to return to again and again.'
