We've been chatting to Oropopo to discover the story behind their beautiful, inky black jewellery and artist Flora McLachlan tells us about her shadowy etchings where daylight fades and creatures come out to roam.

What inspires your work?
'We live in North America's high desert, in New Mexico, and can't help but to be inspired by it. New Mexico has a reputation of a desolate and barren landscape that has given rise to generations of legends and mythologies'.
'Each of our pieces is a tactile photograph creating a sequential journey through our landscape and its culture'.
'In some it is a study of shadows time lapsing across an ancient pueblo, in others it is a self-made constellation of stars inspired by cow skulls found lying in the American-Mexican desert'.

Tell us about the 'dark' aspect of your work?
'Leather has helped us explore the haunting feeling inherent in some of our landscapes. The desert has the ability to preserve a sense of vast time and memory in the silence and distance of open spaces'.
'The result is a wearable piece of the landscape it expresses'.
'The colour choice is most likely tied to a personal preference but it also aids in removing a landscape from its context - changing its significance'.

INTRODUCING FLORA MCLACHLAN
'My preferred technique is etching. I love its atmosphere, the deep mysterious blacks and glowing whites.
I enjoy the physical nature of etching, the working of metal to express tree bark or rain clouds over flints on the chalk downs.
My pictures are records of things seen and imagined by twilight or moonglow. I try to express a sense of the enchantment I feel in a landscape, a sense of its secret face when the light fades and the creatures come out to roam…

'FOX-NEST'
'Fox-nest' is one of a series of etchings showing a fox prowling through the woods, in his element.
Here the fox lies curled in a bramble thicket, wrapped in seeding grasses and feathers and guarded by thorns. The year is turning towards winter: a few shrivelled blackberries still cling to the briars. Above the fox’s bed, lost in a cold mist, the trees are shaken by wild weather, but he sleeps on.
I love the idea of a bed in the woods, but I know it isn’t my element. It must remain a place of mystery and imagination'.
