City Distortions forms part of an ongoing investigation around power-hungry global cities and the environment. This print series is taken from a video installation work. The mirrored footage suggests an uninhabitable city - a flooded metropolis - or one that would have to be navigated in new ways.
The London to Sofia series was created from a video piece which was captured during a train journey, tracing the route of the original Orient Express, to Sofia, Bulgaria, to participate in the Water Tower Art Festival.
Musician Leon Michener composed the original soundtrack for a live collaborative event, Invisible City Symphonies. An alternative live soundtrack was performed at the Berlin screening as part of the Videokills program. The first cinematic screening was at the Castro Theater in San Francisco.
The foundation of Jaykoe's practice is drawing and tracing movements in city space, encompassing a range of processes to sample and form interventions within global metropolises.
Ongoing research is engaged into the alternative utilisation of municipal space and issues related to urban planning, psycho-geography, and community, fed back into the production of video work, installations, drawings, prints and books.
Jaykoe is a project title for the current mode of working, which alludes to issues around agency and identity in relation to the space that is focussed on, used by an artist born and based in London, of Irish heritage.
