Philip Levine is an ideas man, but beyond this, a man who actually makes his ideas happen. Upon leaving university, Phil was already brimming with ideas to unleash upon the art world, from the obscure to the glamorous. His projects to date have included the likes of using his head as an art canvas and Musicali-Fragilistic, a fresh and fun club night based upon everyone’s favourite musical ballads.

Among these however, and arguably his greatest achievement to date, has been the establishment of Lazy Gramophone, an arts collective and independent publishing house he co-founded in 2003 along with Daniel Chidgey and Ben Chidgey. Since the formation of the collective all those years ago, Lazy Gramophone has gone from strength to strength with the launch of the website in 2004, the publishing house in 2006 and extending into events in 2007. In 2010, the company is a well established artistic hub, providing a service of business support and advice to up-and-coming artists.

Talking to Phil about the project it is clear that underlying the structure of Lazy Gramophone is an ethos of genuine integrity. “There’s no ulterior motive like you might find with other arts collectives who just pop up out of nowhere,” he explains. “We want to bring people together, encourage collaboration and offer our skills to the people who need them. The aim is simple; to encourage the creation of as much exciting new work as possible.”

And the setup seems to be working having already stimulated the launch of artists such as Inua Ellams (currently performing at The National Theatre) and Benin City (currently working on ‘Year of the Poet 2010′ with their band now booked for Roundhouse and Southbank).

Lazy Gramophone encourages creativity in all its forms bringing together everyone from, word poets, writers and performers to musicians, DJs and graphic designers. Phil describes the service as a “subtle agency” offering business resources for artists in a non-exploitative manner. “We provide everything an artist might need to move their creativity forward into the business arena which for an individual can often be a daunting and time consuming task. When it comes to anything from buying ISBN numbers to copy editing and type settings for example, naturally most people don’t know where to start.”

Testament to their success, Lazy Gramophone has published two extremely well received books, the first of which, Satsuma Sun Mover was Dylan Thomas Prize nominated. April 5th will also see the launch of their latest publication, ‘The Book of Apertures’; a collection of short fiction, poetry, and images compiled under the theme of the unexplainable. All of these works have arisen from the combined talent of the collective’s pool of emergent writers, artists, typesetters and designers.

As of May 9th Lazy Gramophone will be launching Lazy Sundays, an informal meet-up event for like-minded creative types. The event will be a regular at the Old Queen’s Head in Angel, offering a subtle networking environment encouraging creative collaborations to thrive.

The Multibox is a unique multiple edition, the contents of which has been created by one of five acclaimed artists; Rashid Johnson, Douglas Gordon, Fawn Krieger and Tristan Perich. The contents of the sealed Multibox remains a mystery and all that is known prior to opening is that it will be a three dimensional object created by one of the collaborative artists. The element of mystery elicits intrigue and promises surprise and fun for whoever opens it! Each artist was free to design whatever object they liked to fill the contents of the mystery Mutibox, restricted only by size and weight requirements. Each artist has created extraordinary designs, some thoughtful, some expressive and some humorous but all an expression of the artist’s unique personality and style. The boxes were launched this week, produced in limited editions of 2,000 (500 per artist), and are available to buy now.
They require diapers. They have silly wet noses. They are babies and puppies. Combined, they represent the malignant core of all advertising clichés.

From the 19th century when the terrible Jack the Ripper roamed the streets of Whitechapel spreading fear (in the most bizarre twist of history- today tourists are guided along his trail) to the 1960s Dockland strikes, followed by the architectural experiments that led to the creation of real London landmarks such as the Barbican to most recently the budding art scene in Shoreditch the East End has always attracted media attention! It should not come as a surprise that the E post codes became the subject of a TV series and one of most popular ones on British TV.
EastEnders today is celebrating its 25th anniversary and we at CL have decided to make a dedication to them taking you through all the museums that have sprang up in the area.
The oldest museum in the area is <a href="http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/about-us" target=_blank">Whitechapel Art Gallery which was founded in 1901. Today the gallery plays a unique role in the capital’s cultural landscape and is pivotal to the continued growth of East London as the world’s most vibrant contemporary art quarter. Check out their products <a href="http://www.culturelabel.com/Brands.mvc/Details/46/whitechapel-gallery" target=_blank">here
Construction of the <a href="http://www.barbican.org.uk/" target=_blank">Barbican began in 1971 and since then the centre literally towers over London. Though its architecture is still a subject of dispute its cultural centre is undoubtedly loved by all. Check out their products <a href="http://www.culturelabel.com/Brands.mvc/Details/18/barbican" target=_blank">here.
Finally, coming to terms with the 21st century and the internet <a href="http://www.hiddenart.com/" target=_blank">Hidden Art launched its online gallery featuring all young emerging designers on the site. You can have a look at their products <a href="http://www.culturelabel.com/Products.mvc/Details/2487/shadow-chair" targert=_blank">here.

Described by the press as the next Bloomsbury generation

Described by the press as the next Bloomsbury generation <a href="http://www.misskikisalonpresents.co.uk/" target=_blank">‘Miss Kiki Salon Presents’ is a collaborative effort designed to celebrate and promote the work of emerging artists, photographers, illustrators, poets, musicians, writers and philosophers. The early collaborations brought together a collection of exceptional talents to form the beginnings of a new art/fashion/performance concept that initiated a new and exciting movement in art and culture. Sound a bit Keynes, Bell, Wolf a.k.a Bloomsbury to you? CL thinks so.
The collective is growing and the momentum is bringing to light innovative ideas working on progressive, mutually beneficial incentives. These range from pop-up exhibitions through to the creation of a fashion label based on extracting and abstracting artworks, creating a ripple effect of inspired collections of wearable art. The launch of ‘Miss Kiki Salon Presents’ is tonight and it officially signals the beginning of London Fashion Week.
What’s that? You already thought fashion was art? Then how about you come down to the Reading Rooms in Soho and witness art become fashion!
To get a taste of Miss Kiki Salon Presents we have attached a few images that Miss Kiki Salon herself kindly sent us.
