A Wellcome Shop Revamp

February 4th, 2010 by Pippa

More news fresh from the world of Cultural retail – Wellcome Collection in central London has revamped its retail store with the help of an innovative  makeover from Lumsden at Small Back Room. The Wellcome Collection shop has a brilliant range of unique products relating to medicine, life and art. Many of the products are bespoke including specially commissioned works by popular cartoonist Steven Appleby. Lumsden at Small Back Room were commissioned by Wellcome Collection in July 2009 to design the new look shop. Their Creative Director Callum Lumsden, comments: “Given Wellcome Collection’s interest in the relationship between medicine and art we wanted to reflect this theme within the store.  So we looked at taking the science lab as our inspiration.  To achieve this, we’ve used a combination of Petri dishes, glass beakers and Angle Poise lamps to help create the feel of a lab and define the products within the retail environment.” Apparently like-for-like sales in the shop are up by 56%, so they must have done something right! Donne Robertson, Business and Operations Manager for Wellcome Collection commented: “This not only illustrates the effectiveness of the new merchandising system, it also allows our commercial team to write off the costs within the first year, demonstrating a really good return on the design investment.
