Jennifer Farrell reflects on the runaway success of her first business venture Storm in a Teacup jewellery, her love of Christmas and her big plans for 2011…

Have you enjoyed this festive season and the run up to Christmas?

The last two months leading up to it are by far the busiest I’ve had since starting Storm in a Teacup and I’ve just loved it! I launched a ‘Christmas’ shop on my jewellery website with cocktail glass charms, decorative bells for the Christmas tree and all sorts, I had craft events every weekend and my website was inundated with orders every single day.

2. What have been your bestselling pieces?

The “Pebble & Plume” necklace has been my bestseller from my Exclusive range for Culture Label (which is also my personal favourite), closely followed by my “Love Blooms in Paris” vintage charm bracelets that I sold through CultureLabel which have now all sold out!

3. What’s been your highlight of 2010?

One highlight has been my jewellery reaching further afield and building up an international customer base. While I was late to get on board with Twitter, in the last 2 months alone I gained 1000 followers which meant I was then fulfilling customer orders for Switzerland, Australia, Pakistan, Germany and making friends abroad in the process. Another high has been all the new people I’ve met; fellow designers sharing advice who in turn become friends, lovely customers giving invaluable feedback and enthusiastic people who offered me wonderful new opportunities.

4. Where will you spend Christmas and who with?

Christmas is normally in Ireland with all our relatives in the beautiful countryside, 22 of us crammed round 3 tables end-to-end in my Aunt’s kitchen, everyone pitching in and by 8pm descending into a huge, rowdy game of cards and plenty of bottles of gin. This year comparatively quiet and low-key one at my parents in Hertfordshire with my brother, my boyfriend, and their dog.

5. What do you most look forward to about Christmas?

I absolutely love Christmas and the simple but gorgeous pleasures of lying in front of my parents’ fire, pottering around the kitchen together, eating chocolate with breakfast, having an indulgent lie-in, and spending lazy time with my family. Plus it being perfectly acceptable to take two guilt-free days off work with no pressure to get tasks done and being forced to turn off my laptop without feeling guilty about it!

6. What are your ambitions for 2011?

After my clearance sale on my website, I’m looking forward to starting work sourcing new and interesting materials in order to create some exciting new designs. I’m planning on designing a collection of rings and more vintage pieces. On a wider scale, I hope to maintain my track record for really happy customers who are always thoughtful enough to contact me and tell me how happy they are with their purchases.

7. What are your plans for New Years and do you have any new year resolutions?

On a work level I’m going to resolve to schedule the hours in my days more so that I stick to daily plans each day for 6 days and take a full day off every week. And now the business is more established, i’d like to spend more quality time with my friends and boyfriend.

Tipped as a Top Ten artist on Saatchi Online this year, we had the pleasure of meeting Jock Mooney for the first time when he exhibited at CultureLabel’s Art Store show back in October.

Jock creates works across a variety of media, from sculpture to drawing, painting, film and performance in which he invites the viewer to seek out the familiar and question the unfamiliar.

Jock’s larger paintings are inspired by real life stories – no matter how ludicrous – and in contrast, his minute paintings on cardboard are inspired by the giddy sense of the alien that one finds in foreign supermarkets: ” I am fascinated by “products” and the general cynicism that meets their glossy intentions”.

Jock’s works have been exhibited in galleries and art fairs across the world including London, New York, Mexico City, Miami, Sweden and Puerto Rico.

Working with film, Jock has also co-directed several award winning film based projects with Alasdair Brotherston – their latest offering being the animated music video for Clinic’s latest track Bubblegum.

If you want to see more from Jock, don’t miss his solo show scheduled for Feb 2011 at the Five Hundred Dollars Gallery in Vyners St, London.

You can browse works by Jock on our Art Store here and his website is: www.jockmooney.com

On his flying visit to the UK last week, Nick Regan kindly treated the CultureLabel team to a fascinating presentation on Laikingland’s beautifully crafted kinetic objects.

‘Laiking’ is a Yorkshire/Cumbrian word for ‘play’ and is a fitting description for the collective that aims to craft kinetic objects that ‘engage the observer and evoke a sense of fun and nostalgia’.

Nick, an expert in sunroof technlogy, established the business with UK based designer Martin Smith after years of friendship, combining their respective skills in engineering and design.

The business started in 2008 when Martin handmade the Applause Machine (as seen above) as a gift to celebrate Nick’s wedding. The bestelling machines come in a range of colours and applaud at the touch of a button – watch it in action here.

Laikingland collaborates with a range of international designers to launch new products annually and they are currently showcasing products at the Christmas Conran Shop in Chelsea, London. Other products in the collection include:

A golden boat rides moving waves in A Storm in a Teacup, £550

Mull it over with these eternally tapping Fingers, £480

Mesmerise someone with the Liqourice Loops Magnetic Mobile, £195

Of Cabbages & Kings are gifting all purchases this week with a Little Black Cat Brooch. No better reason then to introduce their fantastic range of unique and handcrafted products…

Based in Stoke Newington in London, Jessica Widdows opened Of Cabbages & Kings in May 2008 offering original products from over a hundred artists and designers, collaborating with many on exclusive sales, exhibitions and workshops:

“Most of our designers aren’t producing for a mass-market so our products are all the more appealing for being so individual and undiluted in style. Unusual jewellery, homewares and ceramics are often produced locally and in small numbers making them exclusive despite the competitive pricing.”

Of Cabbages & Kings are currently running very popular local monthly markets at Abney Hall, Church Street, N16 and Jessica is always on the look out for new artists and designer makers to join, with the markets being a great opportunity to showcase new and existing lines.

The Little Black Cat Brooch by designer Jessica Turnbull of Jess Jess Jewellery is laser cut from black acrylic and measures 35mm by 30mm. Check out the full Of Cabbages & Kings collection here.
