Sothebys with Love Art London

CultureLabel was very excited to experience Sothebys in a very special way on Thursday night with our favourite fellow cultural lovers, Love Art London. As regular readers to our blog know, we reported on Love Art Londons first night at the Haunch Of Venison last month and we were delighted to get to be part of another one. Love Art London offers after-hours access and exclusive tours of some of London’s best collections and exhibitions.

Poppy (Art expert extraordinaire from Sothebys) and Chris (ex-Sotheby’s paintings expert and founder of Love Art London) took us on an amazing behind the scenes tour of the renowned art auctioneers 20th Century British Art sale as Poppy blew us away with some great insider stories, explained how to spot a fake and even allowed us to touch the art!
It was such a refreshing look at art with none of the snobbiness and all of the fun.
We were actively encouraged to actually touch the paintings and even take a peek behind them.
Everyone was giggling with nervousness at the beginning but soon got involved and became less inhibited about reaching out and handling the objects while Poppy provided us with an insightful and entertaining glimpse into what really goes on behind the scenes.
We can say with our hands on our hearts that this one evening was worth the monthly membership of just £25 alone!
This is one alternative culture club you do not want to miss out on!

Colette’s Sarah Recommends…Arnaud Pyvka Goes on a Spree with the Parisian Super-Boutique Owner. Colette is a shopper’s Valhalla. Under one roof, you can find such cult items as a Burberry “Exclusive for Colette” studded trench, graffiti artist André’s “Métaphysique” notebooks for Smythson and—perhaps best of all—a Terry Richardson doll. Opened in 1997 by Colette Rousseaux and her daughter Sarah, the world-famous concept store at 213 rue Saint-Honoré stocks trophy pieces by Comme des Garçons, Maison Martin Margiela and Lanvin, luxe beauty products, glam gadgetry and toy collectibles. The wall of limited edition Nike, Reebok and Converse pieces throws sneaker freaks into a frenzy, while in the restaurant and water bar, chilled shelves are stocked with over fifty varieties of H2O. The store also doubles as gallery, currently featuring work from Craig Redman of cult blog Darcel Disappoints, with South African photographer Pieter Hugo set to exhibit for the duration of the football World Cup. For today’s in-store homage shot by Arnaud Pyvka (British Vogue, Details, Wallpaper*), NOWNESS asked Sarah, the tastemaker and personality behind Colette, to tour us around the shelves and point out a few of her favorite things.

Colette is the ultimate showcase for brand collaborations. What brand mash-up would you most like to see happen?

Chanel x Comme des Garçons.

Are you tired of bad news? Of opening the paper and reading about political corruption, oil spills and stock market crashes? Well, T-post has got the answer for you. The alternative news source featuring obscurities from around the world, fun facts and general trivia will be delivered to your home monthly. But here’s the best part – the magazine is not printed on paper, but rather on T-shirts, and each “issue” is illustrated by a different artist. And though you probably shouldn’t rely on T-post as your only source of information, the amount of useless but entertaining data stored in your head will make you the centre of attention at every party – with a limited edition T-shirt to boot. Here’s the first fun fact: T-Post uses an environmentally certified printer and eco-friendly ink.

CultureLabel spoke to the lovely Julia Crabtree and Will Evans at the Tate Modern’s epic Turbine Hall over the weekend to give you a taster of the type of installations and art there was at the No Soul For Sale festival.
Look with your eyes at our video as they explain their ceiling installation for Auto Italias space.

This Saturday in Glasgow it’s the Stag & Dagger festival and, we’ve brought you dub mucker Joker, the most ranted about band on the planet right now – the Rick Rubin Ting Tings – Sleigh Bells, the awesome Crocodiles, Egyptian Hip-Hop and loads of other bands you like. However, there’s also the Synth Eastwood Collective, who do cool art things and who you probably haven’t heard of. Read on to hear of them.
Synth Eastwood is a creative collective of musicians, DJs, designers, artists from Dublin, whose thing is getting people to participate. Their Stag & Dagger “GIF Shoot” project sounds pretty fun; they’ll be out in Glasgow taking people’s photographs for a few days before the event on Sat 22nd, then will edit them into little stop animations which then get projected large scale in the Art School space on the night of Stag & Dagger.

CultureLabel met up with Karl from Synth Eastwood for a chat.

The idea is that everyone at Stag & Dagger could end up being part of the installation on the night and you can then download your animated portrait at the Diesel Facebook after the event – it then works on your phone, desktop, etc. This was their last show in Birmingham.

They also have lots more artists and musicians and things and probably serve drinks, so even if you’re curmudgeonly you can just show up and take the piss out of fun people while getting pissed at the bar.

A Festival of Independents, No Soul featured cutting-edge art events, performances, music, and film. There was a great atmosphere of cameraderie and collaboration along with some great music and DJ sets. Sound like your kinda thing?
