What do you think – is this knife rest from Third Drawer Down a great birthday present for the man who has everything and is a demon in the kitchen? Or just a bad idea? Answers quickly please… we’re running out of time!

CultureLabel’s BFFs (in the virtual sense at least), Laikingland, will be showing five pieces from their Creative Collaborations range at Ventura Lambrate during Salon Mobile, Milan.

These new kinetic sculptures strike a delicate balance between the whimsical and the sturdy, with a Barbara Windsor wink thown in for good measure. Plus, they’re coming soon to our very own one-stop-culture shop, CultureLabel.com.

The unveiling last Tuesday of Jean Nouvel’s designs for the National Museum of Qatar has propelled his work into the architectural canon.

Since the construction of the Arab World Institute, with its light-regulating apertures that evoked Islamic design, he has built his reputation around buildings inspired by the Middle East. This latest space, summoning a flow of culture – from East to West, from tradition to modernity – is hailed as the zenith of his achievment.

If you’re looking for something to do over the Easter weekend then head down to the ever-on-the-pulse Idea Generation Gallery for another of their popcultural extravaganzas. Having previously shown cute hand-drawn creatures (Monster’s Ink) and auctioned the entire contents of a jilted lover’s home (John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins), this time the gallery is presenting a unique exhibition uncovering the career of Storm Thorgerson – the prolific producer of some of the most recognisable imagery of the modern world. Responsible for what has been dubbed as one the greatest album covers of all time – Pink Floyd’s 1973 The Dark Side of the Moon – Storm’s other collaborations with Genesis, Led Zeppelin and Muse litter bedrooms across the globe (and therefore deserve their place in history).

Idea Generation Gallery 2nd April – 2nd May.

The V&A might be (one of) the last places most (normal) people would associate with sex however the museum’s recent collaboration with Liberty could change all that. One thing the saucily curated collaboration has managed to do, since its unveiling last Friday, is elevate the medium of textiles to risqe new heights. Could the new Liberty / V&A window display be a bid to reposition quilts as the thinking woman’s come-hither bed livery? Is quilting the new patchwork? We hope so, we love a good quilt.

Reg: All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Attendee: Brought Peace?

Reg: Oh Peace- shut up!

(Life of Brian, 1979)

Ok so the Romans brought us sanitation, medication, education and wine but now The Roman Baths have bought us a stunning venue for cultural shopping! Check out these pics (and definitely check out the baths too).

In the nineties we experienced boy band revival and words were what they sang about, and the by the end of the noughties ‘word’ replaced truth expressing a promise made or a bond shared. The importance of well ‘words’ is celebrated during all the whole month of March at the London Word Festival. Events include poetry reading, print making, jazz, puppetry and stand- up comedy; and ‘words’ is what these events will be paying tribute to.
Reading over this blog post I notice my vocabulary is to say the least limited. I must be out of words?
The festival runs from the 7th of March to the 1st April 2010. Have a look at the programme here.

All it took was a handful of celebrities to promise that Acai was great for the skin, follow this up with a buzz concerning the weight miracles the berry performs and all of us mortals became hooked to this black thick substance with a slightly bitter taste that originates from the depths of the Amazon. With so many people consuming it, it’s no wonder the Acai juice and Acai cream manufacturers have had their ‘green’ conscience playing up.

For Earth Day 2010 Kiehl’s has teamed up with Jeff Koons, Pharrell Williams, Julianne Moore and Malia Jones to design and produce Limited Edition Acai Spray bottles. The logic behind it is simple buy it, collect it and re- use it! Besides urging consumers to recycle Kiehl is going a step further, the company plans to donate $200, 000 USD of the proceeds of the sales to rainforest alliance via essence.

This plan works for everyone from the very vein, the arty type to the rainforest fighter. At CL we are already talking about which bottle we would like to buy, and I think I will be going for the Koons!

If you’re keen on jazz you’ll be over the moon to hear that inspirational trumpeter, Tomasz Stanko, is returning to London following a sold out London Jazz Festival concert, with a new project.. The audiovisual extravaganza celebrates the seminal work of Komeda, whose intensely melodic film scores included landmark movie Rosemary’s Baby.

CultureLabel.com has two tickets to the concert on the 27th March at The Barbican. To lay your hands on them just send an email to feedback@culturelabel.com with Tomasz Stanko in the subject line and don’t forget to leave us your contact details.

Artist Chris Ofili’s use of elephant in his art has in the past caused something of an uproar. And, this weekend, roar is exactly what Tate Britain is asking young people with its programme ‘Bring the Noise’!

Curated by Charlie Dark, ‘Bring the Noise’ champions a new wave of London creativity, celebrated for its ability to absorb culture from around the world, remix it and spit it out in new forms. The ten strong collective have been picked as individuals or entities that push boundaries with their work in the same way as Chris Ofili. Check them all out here.

As Tate Britain has very kindly created a special youth ticket so that anyone under the age of 26 can get in for £5 (usual price £10/ £8.50 concessions), there’s no reason not to head on down to Tate Britain and make some noise!

Here at CultureLabel we are fans of fresh blood (not to mention sausage) and so we were delighted to welcome emerging talent Dave Anderson AKA Blood Sausage to the CultureLabel.com team last week.

Dave’s first challenge? To design a series of cards for Mother’s Day… she won’t have seen these in Hallmark.
