Yesterday we read an insightful article on The Arts Newspaper about the current issues faced with America’s art museums. According to the article, there is a distinct lack of diversity among museum employees.
By 2050 the American public could be 30% or more Hispanic, a figure that is not represented in the arts industry. So if America’s art museums are to survive in the 21st century and engage with a changed audience demographic, they must employ select employess from multiple culture and, crucially, encourage ethnic minorities to apply to top-level positions.
As a matter of fact, we touched upon this in our book Intelligent Naivety where we considered ‘interference’ as a means for institutions to re-think their recruitment strategy.
