jotta x Chloe Sells

Benguerra

jotta is honored to present a new series of photographs by artist, Chloe Sells, "Benguerra" 2011. The series has been specially produced by Sells for the Edition Space. Each photograph is printed from the same negative, however as a result of the physical intervention of the artist in the darkroom, each outcome is completely unique. Sells uses visual triggers relating to place and origin in her imagery and her printing process reveals further polarities between these ideas. By means of layered prismatic colour and the physical action of folding the printing paper whilst in the darkroom, the landscapes within each of these images challenge perceived reality and the imagined through exploring exoticism and travel.

Product Description

Chloe Sells received her BA in photography from Rhode Island School of Design and her MA Fine Art at Central St. Martins. She has lived between three continents over the last 13 years, which has influenced her work and its search to understand place and origin. She currently lives between Botswana and London. Sell worked for two years with Terri Weifenbach, John Gossage, Donald Sultan and Ann Lauterbach and was personal assistant to Hunter S. Thompson for two years preceding his death. Sells uses a Contax 645 and Linhof 4x5 to create her photographs and uses analogue film techniques. Sells prints each of her photographs by hand in her darkroom. Her darkroom process reinterprets and transforms her images by using layered prismatic colour, folded, constructed plains to unique and surprising ends. Her work currently concentrates on landscape, as that which encompasses and implicates its viewer, and she uses this potential to inspire discussion about form meaning about place.
