Whitechapel Gallery

Art for the people. It's what I always think when I visit the Whitechapel Gallery. It's not just the location, tucked amongst the shops and caffs of a busy East End street, or the crowd, which is defiantly democratic - all ages and races come here. It's the attitude in this most urban of art galleries.

There must be more artists living in the area around the Whitechapel than perhaps any other gallery in Britain, and it shows. Come on a busy workday afternoon and you'll see art students with notebooks and sketchpads checking out what's new as noisy gaggles of local schoolkids turn the usual art-gallery calm into something altogether more celebratory.

And the curators here have a real eye for the new - Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Nan Goldin all premiered major work here - and the shop is similarly innovative. The Whitechapel puts a spin on the typical gallery-style merchandise with its range of products that take inspiration from the gallery's iconic exhibitions and its rare one-offs by the likes of Paul McCarthy and Anish Kapoor, proving that the 'art for the people' vibe is still alive and well in E1.
