The Hay Festival

Bill Clinton said it best - "The Hay Festival" he claimed "is the Woodstock of the mind". High praise indeed, but deserved, because since 1988 the festival has quietly been transforming itself into a real centrepiece of British cultural life.

Because though at heart this still a place to talk about books and authors, it has become so much more. It's become a festival of ideas - a place where interesting people with smart questions come to meet literary heroes with even smarter answers. The location in the beautiful Welsh Brecon Beacons helps and the line-up is suitably stellar - any event that can attract Jimmy Carter, Stephen Fry, Gore Vidal and Gary Kasparov has to be a blast - but at its core is the social aspect. You'll have more inspiring conversations with more fascinating people here than anywhere else this summer.
